Public Notice – KID Awarded 2018 WaterSMART Grant

The United States Bureau of Reclamation has awarded a 2018 WaterSMART Water and Energy Efficiency Grant to the Kennewick Irrigation District. This $1 million grant will be used in completing the KID WaterSMART18 Canal Lining Project.

KID has been awarded WaterSMART Grants for the past 4 funding cycles. With the 2018 grant funds, KID plans to install 5.6 miles of high-density polyethylene canal liner on the earthened main canals. The project is expected to result in annual water savings of 1,237 acre-feet currently lost to water seepage.

The Bureau of Reclamation manages, develops, and protect water and related resources in an environmentally and economically sound manner in the interest of the American public in 17 western states. According to the Bureau of Reclamation, “The criteria for these grants place an emphasis on conserving and using water more efficiently; increasing the production of hydropower; mitigating conflict risk in areas at a high risk of future water conflict; and accomplishing other benefits that contribute to water supply reliability in the western United States.”
