KENNEWICK, WA – The Kennewick Irrigation District (KID) Board of Directors has approved an increase in irrigation assessments for the upcoming irrigation season. The rate, based on your acreage in the tiered rate structure, could be between 8% and 18%.
Reasons for the Increase
The KID Board carefully considered several factors before approving the assessment increase:
– Inflation: The cost of materials and equipment needed to maintain and operate the irrigation system has risen significantly in recent years due to inflation. In addition, this increase will help ensure the district can continue to attract and retain a skilled workforce to maintain and improve our vital irrigation infrastructure.
– Drought Mitigation: The district is investing in drought mitigation measures to ensure a reliable water supply for the future. This includes upgrading infrastructure and exploring alternative water sources.
– Urbanization: As the Kennewick area continues to urbanize, the demand for irrigation services increases while the amount of available agricultural land decreases. This puts pressure on the district’s resources.
– Minimal Rate Increases in Past Years: The KID Board has worked diligently to keep rate increases to a minimum in recent years, including choosing to not raise assessments in 2023 to assist customers through the COVID pandemic. However, the current economic conditions necessitate an increase to ensure the district’s financial strength and ability to provide quality services.
The Importance of Irrigation Assessments
Irrigation assessments are similar to membership fees for a water delivery network. They fund the maintenance and upkeep of the canals, pipes, and other infrastructure that bring water to homes, farms, and businesses throughout the district.
KID’s Commitment to Efficiency
The KID Board is committed to operating efficiently and keeping costs as low as possible. The district also invests in modern technology and practices to improve water delivery and reduce waste.
